Shepzoy in Somerset, 1894. Als Nathan Appleby ein Haus im schönen aber abgelegenen Somerset Valley von seiner Mutter erbt, beschließt er, ein neues Leben für sich und seine Frau Charlotte zu beginnen und die alte Farm wieder aufzubauen. Das Ehepaar ist wissenschafts- und fortschrittsorientiert: Nathan ist Psychologe, Charlotte Fotografin. Bald jedoch wird die Idylle durch seltsame und beunruhigende Ereignisse erschüttert, die sich unerklärlicherweise um den zunehmend beunruhigten Nathan zu drehen scheinen.
